After working as a newspaper reporter for several years, he took a job writing about politics for Dallas Morning News in 1994. That same year, James married his high school sweetheart, who is now the mother of his two girls. In 2001, he was diagnosed with stage II Hodgkin’s lymphoma and underwent aggressive treatment at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

He has been cancer free since 2003.
